Tomasz Kowalski

live and work in .

The BBAARR installation created for the purpose of the As You Can See exhibition, is a reference to arts and crafts: ornamental window grills, gates, and fences. Kowalski is testing metalwork on “hostile territory” of contemporary art, using steel wire to tell the story of an imagined eccen- tric bar. Similarly to a number of other pieces by Kowals- ki, BBAARR is ostentatiously anachronic, decorative, and narrative, placed outside contemporary mainstream art, as if beyond time. Drawing on the sleepy, slightly psy- chedelic atmosphere of Szczebrzeszyn, a provincial town (where the artist’s atelier is and where many works were created), Kowalski is a match for the tradition of non-urban surrealism
