Jakub Woynarowski

born 1982 in Stalowa Wola, Poland,
lives and works in Cracow, Poland.

Jakub Woynarowski works in the field of graphic art, drawing, comic art, film, installation. He explores the archaeology of contemporaneity, combining research into art history with confabulation.

Novus Ordo Seclorum (Latin for ‘new world order’) is an attempt to move the history of avant-garde beyond iconoclastic tendencies and the tradition of geometrical motifs in art. Woynarowski juxtaposes the legacy of various artistic trends (Constructivism, Suprematism, Dadaism and the revolutionary French architecture of the Renaissance) with Masonic and alchemist themes. Tracking cultural trends that have employed similar visual symbols to represent their ideology, the artist presents the history of contemporaneity in art as a conspiracy theory. This borderline absurd art, with its ironic potential, is reminiscent of that produced by the members of the French Collège de ’Pataphysique, who ridiculed contemporary science by the means of its own idiom.
