The work Sterben und Sterben was a ‘by-product’ of a project carried out by Surowiec for the 7th Biennale of Contemporary Art in Berlin, at the invitation of Artur Żmijewski. The artist organised the action which involved planting young white birch trees in Berlin that had came from the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Not all the trees survived the transplant – one of them, a dead silver birch, is presented as an object in a display cabinet.
